Meister Eckhart, Christian monk and mystic wrote: ‘If the only prayer we ever offer is thank you that will be enough’…. Writing on January 2, 2012 I’m mindful of how essential gratitude is to living a full and full-filling life. So often I take things for granted (my health, relationships, work) that I don’t fully appreciate the gifts that are in my life right here, right now.
When gratitude is missing, what takes its place is discontentment, dissatisfaction….an inability to appreciate what is and to grasp for more. Our advertising industry feeds off this sense of dissatisfaction, encouraging us to find meaning in what we don’t have.
Gratitude in contrast settles…gracing us with contentment, satisfaction, and the ability to be present to what is right now, right here. In this new year I will strive to practice gratitude with intention, to find meaningful and creative ways of being grateful for what I have….and most of all, to be grateful to the One who is the source of all that is good, lasting and true. A good New Year to you.
